I remember very clearly the morning of September 11, 2001. Fresh off the previous day from getting engaged, I was riding on cloud nine looking forward to our nuptials later on the following year. As I was getting ready for morning classes at the University of Texas, Arlington, my television was warming up, while I was having a bagel with jelly for breakfast.
It was then that the first image I saw was what would be the second plane to hit the second World Trade Center tower. I sat in utter shock at what I saw, and I knew that we were under attack. The rest of that day was surreal, not seeing any commercial aircraft in the air, many people stayed off the roads, and as I made my way into work later that afternoon to downtown Dallas, it literally looked like a ghost town, as many businesses had sent employees home for security sake. The immense loss of life that happened on that day was, and will forever be, shocking, sad, and will live in the hearts and minds of all Americans, and people around the world.
On The Brink Of Revival
In the days and weeks after the attacks, people flocked to churches looking for answers. People were looking for some comfort that the cable news channels, our politicians, and yes, even our family and friends could not provide. On the surface, it looked like people were coming back in droves to the L-rd. That the death of so many people got America’s attention, and that a revival of epic proportions was in the works.
And then, nothing of the sort happened.
In just a few weeks after the attacks, those who had flocked to churches looking to G-d for answers, went right back to their lives, and to “business as usual.” This is because many of the messages that were being preached then, are the same messages that pastors are preaching now. That is, America is a fallen nation. It is a rebellious nation, and America needs to repent of her sins.
Rebellion Brings Judgement
The apparently was too much for people to handle, because they could not understand why G-d would allow such a thing to happen. The very idea that someone could suggest that 9/11 happened due to our sinful ways, was just too cruel, too ugly to bear, and that G-d could not have done such a thing. Had they actually read the Bible, they would have found out rather quickly that yes, G-d would allow such a calamity to happen, and it would not have been the first time.
In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet is told to prophesy to the kings of Judah and Israel, that destruction was coming, and it was coming for one main reason.
Jeremiah 21: 8 “And here is what you are to tell this people: ‘Adonai says: “Look! I am presenting you with the way of life and the way of death. 9 Anyone who stays in this city will die by sword, famine and plague. But he who leaves and surrenders to the Kasdim besieging you will stay alive; his own life will be his only ‘spoils of war.’ 10 For I have determined absolutely that this city will have evil, not good,” says Adonai. “It is going to be handed over to the king of Bavel, and he will burn it to the ground.”’
There are more examples of G-d bringing about judgement, such as the Great Flood that occurred during the time of Noach. (Noah)
Genesis 6: 5 Adonai saw that the people on earth were very wicked, that all the imaginings of their hearts were always of evil only. 6 Adonai regretted that he had made humankind on the earth; it grieved his heart. 7 Adonai said, “I will wipe out humankind, whom I have created, from the whole earth; and not only human beings, but animals, creeping things and birds in the air; for I regret that I ever made them.” 8 But Noach found grace in the sight of Adonai.
The common thread here is, G-d did not bring destruction onto a people or nation just for the sake of doing it. In all cases, destruction came because the people rebelled against Him. How did they rebel against Him? By worshiping other gods, by engaging in wild living, such as drunkenness, promiscuity, and homosexuality. Essentially, it came when society had entered into a decadent time period, where love of self and everything else, trumped loving G-d.
Where Is America Now?
Is America in the same situation? I believe that the answer to that question is a resounding “YES”. I believe this is why 9/11 happened, in that, G-d was trying to get our attention, to let this nation that He established and blessed with enormous prosperity know that we had substituted money and acquiring wealth as our gods, instead of the L-rd Yeshua. Think about it. Our nation’s financial center was damaged and it took years to recover. Yet, America completely ignored her need to repent of her sins, and turn back to Yeshua to be restored. Instead, we remained defiant in the face of judgement, and figured we could go it alone.
When I think about the events of this day, I think now, some 16 years later, we have moved further and further away from G-d as a nation, and yet people still expect G-d to bless them. G-d cannot, and will not, reward sin and an unrepentant heart. Make no mistake that the people who attacked us on 9/11 were clearly full of the devil. However, so was the king of Babylon when he attacked Israel. We just read scripture where G-d expressly states that those who choose rebellion, choose death. G-d brought a nation that was full of the devil to chastise and correct the nation of Israel, and clearly, G-d allowed the deranged mentality that is Islam, to come to America and attack our financial markets. It was an effort once again of G-d trying to get our collective attention.
Time To Repent
So now today, and probably the rest of the week we will hear and read, “Never Forget” and, “We Remember”. However, is that all America is capable of doing? Not only should we remember, but we need to recall clearly where our nation was at that time, and more importantly where we are this time. Our nation has just experienced two deadly hurricanes within weeks of each other, with the most recent one, Irma, being the strongest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic. Why is that?
Maybe it’s because society thinks it’s OK for boys to think they are girls, and dress up like such? That it is perfectly acceptable for two men, or two women, to marry each other and think that is a blessed union? All of which are completely forbidden according to the Word of G-d. What is worse, is the number of churches that are literally abandoning thousands of years of biblical teaching in order to stay “relevant” to modern society. All of that of course is simply a cop out to keep the church doors open, and the money rolling in with offerings, because they know that taking such a strong stand would sent their congregations running for the exit doors of the sanctuary. Simply put, America is coming under judgement because she has completely abandoned truth, that is the truth that comes only from Yeshua, and exchanged it for a lie.
The Last Great Hope
There is only one hope right now for America, and to prevent another 9/11 from happening. That is America needs to realize she is deeply in sin, and that everyone from the President on down needs to repent of their sins, and turn their hearts over completely to Yeshua. Only the salvation that comes from repentance and turning away from sin, will save our nation. If such a change is not made, the Bible makes it clear that particular society will crumble.
So on this day, while we are not forgetting those who died on that day, let us also not forget what got us to that point. Afterwards, lets come together as a nation and cast our sins upon Yeshua, and become overcomers!
